Thoughts on Alcohol 5.08

Are you cold turkey or do you knock one back from time to time? -Brett Vandermolen

My response follows:

I’ve done periods of abstaining before, it was good, and what I needed to get out of the party scene.  Today, Man, I’ll drink a beer every now and again.  Glass-o-wine, etc.  I try to stay away from the liquor, cause I love me some Maker’s/ice.

It’s a long story but my parents are hard core Church of Christ, they don’t really believe in drinking alcohol, because “the bible says” not to get drunk, and “where do I draw the line there?”  2, 3 or 6?  And if only, two and I choose margaritas, am I testing the line… why test God?

Which I think is good logic, just played out a lot more legalistic in my life, then I liked.  In my walk today, I’d like to find a way to continue to be loving toward people who drink, and not necessarily be a “sober-drunk.”

I try to make sure I’m in a good situation, around good people, if I am to drink.

Honestly, Alcohol has never really done ANYTHING beneficial in my life.  Except that, I’m a fun person to party with.  But I think that’s more of a character flaw in my sober life, then a benefit in my drinking life.  Get me?

Just means, I’m not being the enjoyable, happy, exuberant person I can and should be IN CHRST.

You’re probably getting more then you asked for here, but I think the BIG thing is to be a good example, beyond reproach.  Romans 14, is a good text to go to… considering meat sacrificed to idols… the vegetarians, are religious people, Jews, who would rather NOT eat meat, then to eat meat that could POSSIBLY have been sacrificed to idols… or unhealthy meat like pork.

14.10 We will all stand before God’s judgment seat.

14.12 Each of us will give an account of himself to God.

14.21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.

14.8 Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.  That’s what’s important.

14.22 Whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.
