prayers should scare us.

Chuck Madden said it best the other night at ED,  before I get out of bed every day, I acknowledge the Lord as Lord of my life, ask Him to help me through the day, and grace enough.

He encouraged us to pray for BIG things, Jeremiah 32.17, nothing is too big for God.  Jereremiah 32.27, nothing is too hard for Him.  Jeremiah 33.3 – Call to Him, He will answer with great and unsearchable things which you do not know.

Chuck said, “Our prayers should scare us.”

So I pray this.

Jeremiah 32.38-39- “They will be my people, and I will be their God.  I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me for their own good and the good of their children after them.”

Singleness of heart and action.  Lord, open and close doors, for your glory.

Be blessed, my friends.

Being honest, I feel like I leave you short there.  I walk away and think about how I may state what I am saying in more plain terms, then as I read CS, I see that my thought, leads to imagination, leads to language, which leads us to metaphor.

I pursue Ultimate Truth, here.  I seek God.  Ps. 27 says, ” My heart says, ‘Seek your face.” Your face Lord, I will seek.”  I seek to know the ultimate reality of the universe.  I have for years analyzed the universal.  The things which ALL man, struggle with.  The things in which we look for, and seek to find.  Why do we all like sheep go astray?  Why do we all do this?  If Creation, seeks to worship it’s Creator, If God, standing outside of Nature, came into this world, submitted himself to servanthood, obedient unto death, died for Love.  For himself, because He is a God of Love, we should seek this purpose.  It indeed is the only thing we can seek.

Reality, Normality, Truth, all lie within Him.  Beginning, End, and now the middle, all lie within His grasp.  How could our hands, minds or hearts understand one inkling of this un-understandable concept?  How could we see?  The Lord himself must open our eyes.  Grace must be from Him, lest it not be grace.  Truth, in itself, must come from Him.  Emotion, all I see and feel and touch and taste and smell must be under His control.  How can I think anything else?

So when, this man, Jesus, says, “Come, Follow me,”  He speaks physically, He has a thought, which leads to imagination, which leads to language, which ultimately leads to metaphor.  This God, physically was here, What a Miracle!  “I’ll make you Fishers of men.”  It lies so deeply in each one of His statements to people, in an conversation with Nicodemous, in John 3, “I have spoken to you of earthly things, which you do not believe, how then will you believe if I speak to you of heavenly things?”

Lord, speak to us about Heavenly things.  Push our faith past this present reality.  Give us an understanding of who you are.  What you’re about.  What you’re doing this day.  and How we may follow.  Give us the ability to believe, trust, and faith, that You, You indeed, are the ultimate truth, the only reality.  You leave us in fear, yet You leave us fearless.  You leave us only in abandon, but not abandoned.  You leave us in awe, and there is no opposite.  Your greatness overwhelming, your reality, just plain ole amazing.

You, indeed, leave us in Love.  With You.

We know, perfect Love drives out fear.  And in the end, we will know You more.

One response to “prayers should scare us.

  1. boa, I love this because it is something I have been learning and reflecting on as well lately. The Lord has been asking me to pray big, and for things that I know He wants for me. Understanding of who He is, a more tender heart, eyes to see and ears to hear, and ultimately, Christ-likeness. Heavenly things. 1 John 5:14-15 is key. It’s also worth meditating on Paul’s prayers in Ephesians 1 & 3…he asks for things that he openly admits “surpass knowledge” yet that doesn’t stop him from needing them and dialing in the request.
